The Department of Kinesiology at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the area of Motor Control and Movement Neuroscience.  Candidates must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate area within or related to Kinesiology and demonstrate an established record of scholarship, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and service. The successful candidate must have a record of scholarly accomplishments, including success or promise in obtaining extramural funding for research, and have a commitment to teaching excellence. The committee strongly encourages applications and nominations of women and persons of underrepresented groups.  Post-doctoral experience and an established research program are preferred. Preference will be given to a candidate whose research builds on existing strengths in the department. This position will begin in Fall 2020.

The Department of Kinesiology offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees and is part of the College of Health and Human Development (https://hhd.psu.edu/). Our graduate program includes six areas: Motor Control, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training and Sportmedicine, Psychology of Physical Activity, and History and Philosophy of Sport. The Kinesiology Department houses a world-renowned research environment that is supportive for faculty research, and provides an attractive training atmosphere for student and post-doctoral trainees as well as visiting scholars.  With 26 tenured and tenure track faculty and 19 non-tenure track faculty the Department is has consistently ranked among the top 5 kinesiology graduate programs nationally and is internationally recognized for its research accomplishments. The Department currently enrolls approximately 700 undergraduate and 47 graduate students.

We are seeking a candidate who can complement and extend our current department research strengths in motor control and movement neuroscience. Our faculty in this area have excellent records of accomplishment and leadership, and our programs in motor control and biomechanics are among the top in the world. We have a competitive and rich intellectual environment that is fostered by our Center for Movement Science and Technology (C-MOST), which attracts world-renowned speakers in movement science throughout the year, as well as workshops and conferences in motor control and biomechanics every year. In 2018, we hosted the first conference on Progress in Clinical Motor Control that attracted 275 participants and world-renowned speakers in motor control and rehabilitation science. We have a strong record of mentorship of our tenure track faculty who receive protected research time, excellent research resources, and grant writing mentorship. Our motor control area has a strong record of productivity, external funding, experience in grant review and grant-mentorship, providing excellent support to young faculty.  Our faculty have collaborations across campuses and disciplines, and have developed excellent recruitment resources in special populations including stroke and Parkinson’s disease.  

Resources at Penn State in areas pertinent to the study of human motor control include:  the Penn State Neurosciences Institute; the Center for Neural Engineering; the Clinical Research Center, the Center for Healthy Aging; the Social, Life, and Engineering Sciences Imaging Center; the Social Science Research Institute, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute; Hershey Medical Center; and the Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences.
